Brønnøy kommune

The Municipality of Brønnøy extends from the edge of the open ocean in the west, through one of Norway's largest archipelagos and via fjords to high mountains in the east. The majority of the population lives in the town of Brønnøysund.

Brønnøy is a significant agricultural municipality in a Norwegian context. Dairy and meat are the most important products, but forestry and logging are also important industries. Brønnøy has a moderate fisheries industry. In recent times, the service industry has also emerged as a central source of employment. Establishment of the Brønnøysund Register Centre strongly contributed to this development. Furthermore, a helicopter and supply base has also been established in Brønnøysund. The municipality has significant mineral deposits.The municipality is also the geographical centre of Norway, located a couple of kilometres north of Brønnøysund. The distance to Trondheim is 360 kilometres, Mosjøen 160 kilometres, Mo 260 kilometres, Bodø 530 kilometres (along the E6), and Oslo 900 kilometres. The municipality has excellent air, road and sea communications with the rest of the country.

Torghatten mountain has attracted kings, emperors and tourists for several hundred years. Legend has it that the troll Hestmannen shot the arrow that made the mountain's characteristic hole, which is 160 metres long, 35 metres high and 15-20 metres wide. Visitors marvel at nature's immense powers, which have been at work here for thousands of years. Torghatten is located a mere 15 kilometres from Brønnøysund.

The foundation of St. Knut's Church was originally a soapstone church, erected around 1350 and excavated in 1934. Nearby is Skarsåsen Fortress, fortifications built during World War II. Today, this is a popular recreational area and lookout. There are information boards here, with wartime historical facts. There are plans to convert the unique Lomsdal waterway into a national park. This area has untouched wilderness and plenty of hiking opportunities.

Brønnøy's contribution to the "Footprints in the North" project is Tilrem, which was the seat of a powerful chieftaindom. The site includes burial mounds, as well as a star-shaped monument from pagan times. Furthermore, there are circle settlements and a medieval church, as well as a trading post from historic times.
